There would be every year with rare exceptions ‘pre-harvest famine’… During the ‘pre-harvest famine’, folk lived from grass or various greens – we felt the lack of nourishment, almost every year, from spring till the crop came in. Grain and other things would jump in price, just double, and could be had only from the Jews. As a result everyone gleaned his fields with care, since it was held a sin that any be left on the stubble to waste. In our day we can have no conception of the hunger-times of old, and of the famines folk went through.5
